The Story Behind the Piece
Hallowed Grounds was inspired by a trip to Victoria in the spring of 2025—a place that stayed with me long after I left.
There’s something about those coastal forests. The trees feel older. The air feels heavier. And the moss—thick, quiet, and everywhere—gives the entire space a sense of reverence.
I kept coming back to that feeling while painting this.
For this piece, I worked more deliberately with the surface than I usually do. The moss needed presence—not just visually, but physically. It had to feel like something you could reach out and touch.
The result is a painting that isn’t just about a forest—it’s about what it feels like to stand inside one.
